Check with seller Sativa vs Indica vs Hybrid Strains: Is It All B.S.? Calgary

Published date: September 2, 2024
  • Location: Calgary, Alberta, Canada

With the legalization of cannabis in Canada, particularly in places like Calgary, the cannabis industry has flourished, leading to a surge in dispensaries and diverse cannabis products. When navigating these options, you’ll encounter strains categorized as indica, sativa, or hybrid. Many consumers rely on these classifications to predict their experience, but is this system reliable? Let’s explore the myths and realities behind these traditional labels and how they affect your choice.

The Roots of Cannabis Classification

The classification of cannabis into indica, sativa, and hybrid strains dates back to the 18th century. Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus first identified Cannabis sativa in 1753, recognizing its light green color and narrow leaves. French biologist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck followed in 1785 by identifying Cannabis indica, noted for its dark green color and broader leaves.

In the 20th century, the classification was further refined. American biologists Richard E. Schultz and Loran Anderson argued that Cannabis sativa and Cannabis indica should be categorized based on their cannabinoid ratios—THC and CBD content. This led to the belief that sativas had high THC and low CBD, while indicas had high levels of both. Russian botanist Dimitrij Janicechewsky identified Cannabis ruderalis, known for its automatic flowering cycle, adding another layer to the classification.

However, modern researchers have found these distinctions to be overly simplistic and not entirely accurate. Current studies suggest that the real indicators of a cannabis strain’s effects are its cannabinoid and terpene profiles, not just its classification as indica, sativa, or hybrid.

The Myth of Indica and Sativa Effects

Traditionally, indica strains are associated with relaxing, sedative effects, often recommended for evening use or sleep aid. Sativa strains, on the other hand, are believed to be energizing and uplifting, enhancing creativity and sociability. Hybrids are supposed to offer a balance of both effects. But is this classification still relevant?

Indica Strains: Indicas are often described as providing full-body relaxation, making them ideal for winding down after a long day. Common effects include:

  • Relaxed

  • Sleepy

Sativa Strains: Sativas are renowned for their stimulating effects, potentially boosting mood, energy, and focus. Typical effects include:

  • Happy

  • Euphoric

  • Focused

  • Energetic

Popular sativa strains include:

  • Jack Herer

  • Sour Diesel

  • Durban Poison

  • Amnesia Haze

Hybrid Strains: Hybrids combine elements of both sativas and indicas, leading to a spectrum of effects depending on their dominant characteristics. The effects can range from relaxed and euphoric to energetic and happy. Popular hybrids include:
